Chapter Twelve

When I shuffled into the kitchen the next morning, Bobbie looked like she’d been waiting for me.

“It’s about time you got up.”

“Stop yelling, please.” I held my hands over my ears.

She crossed her arms over her chest. “Do you want to tell me about the man asleep on our sofa?”

A quick peek in the living room, and the events of the previous evening came back to me. I’d insisted that it wouldn’t be safe for Henry to walk back to the inn in the heavy snow. Somehow, I’d had the presence of mind to offer him the sofa and not invite him to share my bed.

He lay fast asleep on his back under the afghan with his mouth open and one arm hanging off the side of the sofa. A bump under the afghan moved, and Kit stuck her head out. She seemed to change her mind, and burrowed back next to Henry’s warm body, curling up next to one of his legs.

“That’s Henry,” I explained. “He’s staying at the inn. The snow was really coming down last night when we left Gypsy’s, so he walked me home.”

“He’s pretty hunky. I might have stayed with him at the inn if I were you.”

I made a face but changed the subject. “Coffee.”

“Hair of the dog might be more effective,” Bobbie said, “but I have something even better.”

“No.” I held up a hand as if that could stop her. “Not one of your hangover remedies.”

Bobbie ignored me and whipped up an inky-brown concoction that she placed in front of me. “Drink that, and I’ll pour you a cup of coffee.”

I held my nose. I’d just brought the glass to my lips when Henry appeared in the doorway.

“Good morning.” He smiled bashfully at Bobbie. “You must be Whit’s grandmother. I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Henry.”

Bobbie grinned, a twinkle in her eye. “I haven’t heard a thing about you. Are you new in town?”

“Sit down.” I pulled out a chair for Henry. “You might as well have a cup of coffee while she grills you. I’m going to take a shower.”

When I returned to the kitchen, Bobbie and Henry seemed to be getting along like old friends. I poured myself another cup of coffee.

Bobbie checked an app on her phone and announced that the roads were clear. “And no more snow in the forecast, at least for today.”

“I need to walk into town to get my car.” I nudged Henry. “Ready to go?”

We bundled up and stepped outside. The snowplow hadn’t come up our street yet, but as heavy as the snow had been coming down, there were only six inches or so on the ground.

We trudged off into town. “Thanks for last night and letting me stay over.”

“Yeah, thanks for walking me home.” I pulled my cap down lower, making sure my ears and forehead were completely covered. “I forgot what a bad influence Tess can be. I suppose I thought she might have changed.”

“Bobbie’s really great. Not sure how many grandmothers would have reacted that way finding a strange man on her sofa.
